Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:
“Today, justice was served when Donald Trump, by a bipartisan vote, became the only President in U.S. history to be impeached twice. The President of the United States incited and inspired a domestic terrorist attack against the legislative body of our country. It was an assault on our Capitol, on our Constitution, and on our people. Never in our history has a more egregious crime been committed by a sitting President. Trump betrayed our democracy, our national security, and our entire country. The Trump era will go down as a dark time in American history. Today, Democrats pursued accountability and showed there must be consequences for Trump’s dangerous actions.
“Now, John Cornyn, Ted Cruz, and the United States Senate must review the evidence and act according to the Constitution. Partisanship must be pushed aside and our elected officials must put the rule of law above all else. Trump is a clear and present danger to our country, and the Senate should conduct this impeachment trial expeditiously and remove him from office immediately.
“Accountability is required to heal this country. There are many Texas Republicans whose actions warrant expulsion from public office. Congress and legal authorities need to continue investigations, charge all of those responsible for unlawful acts against our country, and do everything in their power to ensure that justice is served. Anything less would be an affront to our Constitution and a disservice to the millions of patriots who have fought and bled to defend our democracy.”
